Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) in India are classified by security level (Class 3 is now standard), usage (Sign, Encrypt, Sign & Encrypt), and user type (Individual, Organization). As per recent mandates, Class 3 DSC is the most secure, mandatory for e-tendering, GST, and MCA filings. These certificates ensure document integrity and signer authenticity.

CLASS 3 DSC

Class 3 DSC: Highest level of security. It requires physical or online Aadhaar-based verification (e-KYC) of the applicant. Used for high-security transactions like e-auctions, e-tendering, and court filings. 

2. Classification Based on Usage (Functional)

• Sign DSC: Used to sign digital documents, ensuring the authenticity of the signer and the integrity of the document (i.e., it hasn’t been altered).
• Encrypt DSC: Used to encrypt confidential data, primarily used for e-tendering and secure communication.

3. Classification Based on User Type

• Individual DSC: Issued to individuals (e.g., directors, chartered accountants) for personal use or on behalf of their organization.
• Organization DSC: Issued specifically to organizations, often used by authorized signatories.
• DGFT DSC: A specialized certificate for importers and exporters, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)
